Colonial North Carolina, particularly Granville County, was an area where a good relationship existed between whites and "free colored individuals." A number of prominent individuals petitioned the state legislature for tax relief for inter-racial marriages, according to "Colonial and State Records of North Carolina," Volume 5, [1755]: Free Blacks in Colonial Virginia. But until the latter part of the seventeenth century, they enjoyed many of the same rights as free whites. But if you are racially mixed and trying to find and interpret data about your family, these results can be confusing, especially if in one census they are white, in another mulatto and maybe in another black. In some census years, there was no category at all for Indian. In others, all free people of color were recorded in one group.
